“If you haven’t played Call of Duty then you shouldn’t call yourself a gamer… ” – Anon
As a gamer Modern Warfare 1 (MW1) and Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) were games that redefined gaming for me. It had the same effect that Quake3 and Half-Life had in the way i play games and evaluate them.
What makes Modern Warfare series stand apart is the game play, graphics and how deeply the game gets you involved in the game. I’m not going to talk about what makes MW series so special, because that is not why i’m writing this post.
The release of MW3 was something i was looking forward to. It was purely because of the impact that the previous two had. MW2 ended in the most classic, dramatic and original way possible. MW2 is the only game that got me to the brink of tears. Once when Ghost and Roach was mercilessly shot and killed by Shepherd and the second the classic ending. So i’m not lying when i say i wanted the game so badly.
A delay with a faulty laptop and work pressure meant that i had to wait two months to get my hands on the game. Finally in January 2012, i played the game once, twice and thrice. But in terms of plot, MW3 didn’t quite reach the levels that MW2 had set. There were some excellent missions and sequences, but the plot was not quite up to the mark.
After my brother too had finished playing the game, we talked about all the three games. He too felt that when compared to MW2, MW3 plot was a not up to the mark. Nevertheless MW3 in itself is a good game. He the went on to tell me how the game should have been.
Here is how the game should have been -
MW3 introduces Yuri. He is playing alongside Price, Soap and Nikolai while they run from Makarov’s men. In the Prague mission, it is revealed that Makarov knew Yuri before. Upon questioning by Price, Yuri confesses that he changes sides. The game ends with Makarov killing Yuri and Price killing Makarov eventually.
But, think about this, what if Yuri was the actual criminal mind. What if it was Yuri, who had joined Nikolai’s men, infiltrated into TaskForce 141 just so that he could ‘tie up loose ends’ by killing Makarov and remain hidden for ever. The game should have progressed in this manner, with Price, Soap and Nikolai eventually uncovering the truth.
