The Media’s Negligence of the North-East

Face the fact – the media has always had a sloppy side in reporting whats happening in the north-east. The Indian Media, simply fails to actively report any incident thats happening in the North-Eastern parts of our country. The only time it ever appears in the news is for some ULFA bomb attacks or if one of the so called ‘famous’ politicians makes a visit. Apart from that the Indian Media seems to have no reason what so ever to report on the incidents of the north-east.

So what exactly is the north-east. The North-East, as its commonly known across India, consists of the 7 states located at the north-east part of India, viz., Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura. Tough many people have heard about Assam in the news, the rest of the 7 ‘sisters’, remain in a total negligence from the media. Partially blame it on the political leaders leading the country. Though they have the time and money to go to every other state in the country, they just cant make it to the north-east.

manip 313 The Medias Negligence of the North EastI have friends who hail from that region, and i admit that, if it wasnt for them, i would have never even realized about this. The media, just feeds us with all the rubbish things from a shoot-out in Delhi to the local political party’s march in Cochin. These things are hailed and showcased as things of national interest, but not the killing of a law abiding officer and how it subsequently put a population into crisis. I’m talking about the killing of Dr Kishan, who was brutally murdered.

The sad part is that, when i got a mail from a friend asking me to help him report this event, i googled for it. The top results for – “Dr Kishan murder” – didnt even reveal any of the top news sites. Here are a few links -

It was indeed sad when, i was faced with the question, “We are also Indians, why are we treated differently every where?”. It time for us to stop ignoring whats happening to our brothers and sisters out there, and ask for more stringent action from the government. This news were actively reported by many sites and media, based out of the north-east, but none of the main-stream media picked it up.

Following is the mail that i received -

Respected Sir/Madam,
Three unclaimed bodies lie in the morgue of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal since Feb. 17. They have been brutally murdered, hit with spade on head and then smashed with rock. One among them is Dr. Kishan, gold medalist at Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, a civil servant of Manipur government and Sub-divisional officer of a remote village in Manipur. His mistake – he stood against diversion of development fund by the mighty extortionist, the self proclaimed savior of the region, popularly known in common man’s term as inner government and more powerful than the democratically elected government. He did something which no one, not even the Chief Minister of the state, dare to do. The other two were his sub-ordinate staff.

The incident brought already troubled state into complete standstill since last four days because of Bandh, Strikes and curfew. The bodies are not claimed and ex-gratia rejected by families demanding injustice. With no transportation, market, medicine shop etc. the entire state has turned to a hell on earth. Essential commodities are not reaching the state. People are not having enough food to eat now. My brother is sick and my parents could not even step out of the house to buy medicine. Families of vegetable vendors who buy 1-2kg of rice everyday by selling their vegetables are starving now. The schools and colleges in the whole state are closed.

But what is more shocking than the incident and the situation following it, is the fact that the national media, as usual, is ignorant of the situation. Perhaps, Jawaharlal Nehru’s ” Jewel of India” and “the birth place of modern day polo”, is not as important and as valuable as SRK’s shoulder. Dr. Kishan was as Indian as S Manjunath, a sales manager of IOC, who also met the same fate a few years back, which media took up making it an issue for whole nation which is in fact a great thing. He belongs to the state whose people still praise for Indian cricket team, the state whose sportspersons still proudly represent India in all international sports events. But why so much partiality in recognizing a hero? Is it because the state contributes very little TRP of news channels, buys less copies of newspaper and appeal less interest to the sponsors? Is heroism recognized by a place of birth rather than act he does to the Indian media? Doesn’t the situation of 30 lakh population have anything do with anyone in India?

Manipur is turning into a killing field with daily basis killings on the card. In such a situation in Manipur, when the responsibility of media becomes twofold, where are they? They need to look at the reality faced by the people of the state. They made the news of “Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur Break-up” as breaking news but don’t bother to look at the traumatized situation of a whole state. Do the people of state deserve such treatment? It hurts when all these things are happening right in front of our eyes.

The world will laugh hearing the much hyped term “Superpower India” when the people of the country does not even know the boundary of their own country and not aware of what is happening inside their country. Thanks to the responsible Indian media. Hats off to you!!
Regards,
xxxxxxxx

Its indeed sad.

proto.in – Breeding the New Indian CEOs

logo proto.in Breeding the New Indian CEOsLast day me and Ujj, a fellow mutineer, was at the Nimhans Convention Center for Proto.in, the startup event. The reach that event had on each of the participants and the people gathered there was quite profound. I have been to quite a lot of conferences and un-conferences, but this one was nothing like the ones i had ever been to. The talent that this event show cased, the ideas that flowed, the success stories that were shared, the new avenues that were opened up for many was quite, let me say it this way, impressive!!!

I vividly recollect telling Ujj, after the event that, i quite didnt know that there were so many smart geniuses in India. Generally when i hear the word start-up the picture that i frame is one of a bunch of people who are sitting in a room and rolling out a service on the internet and minting money(well, if they are lucky). So i wanted to see if there was anyone else who was running a non -IT based, non-internet business. Yes indeed there are, and as it turns out the Healthcare and Wellness sector in India is yet to be tapped to its potential.

I was in for “The Proto.in ShowCase”, where a bunch of start-ups, that were selected on the basis of their trend-setting status, were asked to showcase their product in 6min. Here is a list -

  • Nualgi – Kadambari Consultants.
  • Remindo – an office social-networking site
  • Ooha Kiosk Infrastructure – Ooha Services Pvt. Ltd.
  • InkFruit – Fingerprints Fashions Pvt. Ltd
  • Fachak – Youtube, Flickr, Scribd, Slideshare searches all rolled into one
  • Taroby – Advanced Millennium Technologies – Web 2.0 based Messaging Solution

So if u thought it was all about show casing you company and product, you’re wrong. The day’s keynote address was by Bob Young, and yes it was really interesting to hear him speak and the way he ended up in having the worlds largest collection on bad poems online icon smile proto.in Breeding the New Indian CEOs . Sandeep Singhal, Nexus Capital, had a very interesting conversation with the audience on – Thinking Beyond Mobile and Internet. It was here that he pointed out that, yes there can be successful startups outside the mobile and internet sphere.

At the end of the day as i was leaving i realized that, what we need is not more and more conferences on diverse topics, but conventions like Proto.in, where the best in everyone, from the organisers, to the speakers, to the participants, to the techies like me (to the good food and the crowd), are exposed.

I’m looking forward for the next Proto.in.

Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement – A Shame!!!

I was shocked to see this advt. from the Dec 5th edition of The Times of India.

getimagedll 654x1024 Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement A Shame!!!

If you are still wondering what’s wrong with the advt. Look at the soldiers. They are not even Indian. They are bloody US Maries sporting M4 Carbine. Even the tank that they show is not one that used by the Indian Army.

The so called Sainik Welfare people from Karnataka, Salute the World’s best Armed Forces and puts up US soldiers pic. If they cant get their advts right, i have no idea what they are so proud of. I wish they were among the ones killed in Mumbai.

Shame!!!

Singh is the Kinng! – An Entertainer

200px Singhisking Singh is the Kinng! An EntertainerA friend of mine once said, when you are watching the movie ‘Partner’, leave your logic at home and the movie is entertaining. So it follows that, at times when my friends invite me to watch a Hindi movie, i just pack-off my logic to a holiday at the Bahamas. It applies to all mindless comedies that have come out in the name of entertainment. Some makes it through, but some just fail.

Of late Akshay has had a string of comedy movies under his belt and most of them were with the gorgeous Katrina Kaif. Singh is Kinng is no different, but there is something fresh about the comedy and it really makes sense.

Lets just say that the movie does justice to itself. Its a very simple story of Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar), who would just do anything to help you out.Happy is there to help you if you need it or not. But there is a problem, he has got a negative ‘Midas touche’. He leaves a trail of destruction when he sets out to help someone. Its his golden heart that wins him other’s hearts. Rangeela (Om Puri) and the rest of the villagers like Happy, but Happy’s helping hand is now everyone’s headache.

Then there is Lucky Singh(Sonu Sood) a.k.a King, who is a Don in Australia. King has had many close calls on his life. One fine day when King’s dad fall sick, Rangeela makes a plan to get rid of Happy by sending him to Australia to get King, but finds himself having to join Happy. With some sudden turn of events Happy and Rangeela find themselves in Egypt, where he meets Sonia (Katrina Kaif).

What follows is some nicely scripted comedy and the events that make Happy to be the new King! Nothing more to add to the spoilers, so guys enjoy Happy’s journey to Australia. It will sure tickle you to the bones.

Things to watch out for (or rather not to watch) :

Uff!!!! Katrina, she is gorgeous, she is damn sexy, but she is there just to fit in the role of a heroine. Neha Dupia still gets a fair amount of scenes and dialogues. Katrina’s dialogue is still half-Hindi and half-British and never runs more than half-a-page, even if every line was put together. Even after so many movies, her expressions remind me of the Hollywood actor Steven Segal. With Steven Segal you cant make out what his expression is – he kills, shoots, kisses, cries – all with the same constipated look. With Katrina, oh god, its always the Vogue-cover-model look. Damn it even when she is crying, its the same!

The fun part of the movie is, most of the actors who has been the regular villains and the serious characters, playing a comical role. Ranvir Shorey still pays the unfortunate lover. The song with Snoop Dogg would have been better if the Hindi rap part was done by, say Hard Kaur or Bombay Rockers or somebody else.

Highlights of the Movie :

  • Katrina’s gorgeous looks (again and again and again)
  • The opening scene of Akshay
  • Neha Dupia – all sizzling
  • The Hindi version of ‘corn-flakes’ – LOL
  • The scene where all of them get to discuss on Happy and Sonia – ROTFLOL
  • Javed Jaffery

Pritam has come up with some real good songs that have been packed really well, just like the icing on top of the cake. The title track has already made a mark.

ENOUGH! – i wont misguide you any more or get you misguided by the high minded critics in town who fail to appreciate simple things in life and movies, who look for reasons under the earth and beyond the sky to say bad things about any and every movie ever made unless they are paid well enough to say otherwise OR unless they are member of the ‘Bollywood’s Mutual Admiration Society’ or ‘Star Power Sucker’s Club’, and before you fall victim of the vicious process of letting someone else decide what film you should and shouldn’t watch…let me tell you, – Watch the movie without fail! Full Paisa Vasool!

Singh is Kinng!!!
