Namma Bengaluru Awards 2009

Have you ever felt the need to recognize a person from you locality for his or her contributions to the society, may that be big or small?nba logo Namma Bengaluru Awards 2009

Have you felt the need to recognize a Govt. employee that goes beyond his duties and sets an example by outright commitment to his work?

How about recognizing an NGO for its public service or a Residence association for its diligence in waste management, maintaining the greenery or its initiative in having a rain harvesting project?

Bangalore is a city that is vibrant because of its people that make so. There are ordinary people among us that do extra-ordinary work to help the society and each other. How about recognizing them? Wont that be an inspiration for them to continue doing what they were doing and for others to come forward, making The Garden City, truly a great place to live in.

Namma Bengaluru Awards 2009 is aimed to do that.

Straight out of their site  -

An initiative by Member of Parliament and Convener of ABIDe – Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Namma Bengaluru Awards is launched with the vision to inculcate a sense of optimism and interest in the minds of the common man and bring to the limelight ordinary citizens for their extraordinary contributions, recognize exemplary contributions made by individuals who have contributed to Bengaluru’s developments, for those who have enriched the lives of common man, to the ordinary citizens for their extra ordinary contributions and to create Ambassadors of best practice who set standard for the rest to follow.

The citizens of Bangalore will be recognized under two major categories -

  • Namma Bengaluru Awards for Public Officials and AgenciesTo recognize public officials and government agencies (Like MPs, MLAs, MLCs, Officers & Staff of Civic agencies like BDA, Bescom, BBMP etc)
  • Namma Bengaluru Awards for Private Citizens and InstitutionsAimed at recognizing efforts of citizens and private institutions including NGOs, RWA, Companies, schools and others

I know what you’re thinking. Why would you ever want to recognize anyone from BDA, Bescom or BBMP or any Govt. Official for that matter. Thats where you’re missing the point. Inspite of the fact being that we all hate the govt. officials and brand them as lazy 9-4, job secure, bribe-demanding people there are some really gem-of-a-characters among them. Why cant we just recognize them? Why cant we honour them? Dont belive me?

Well if u ask me i would love to recommend the BMTC Volvo bus drivers and conductors for their courteous behavior. Every time i have travelled in one of them, they have always had service-with-a-smile motto. Same goes with the Bescom guy who turned up on a Sunday evening because there was power out-age at our area.nominate Namma Bengaluru Awards 2009

Last day i was at Namma Bengaluru Foundation‘s office, which is more or less the same as Mr. Rajeev’s office, to be briefed about the whole initiative. I was joined there by Balu and we were both surprised with the magnitude of responses that Namma Bengaluru Awards 2009 has received.

The nominations were opened on 14th of October and closes on 14th of November 2009. Guess how many nominations they got till now. Well Balu and me guessed somewhere around 250-300. No, they have so far got close to 2000 nominations. Yes thats right – 2000. And in one case, all the students of a class wanted to nominate their teacher for the award. Thats the beauty of this. Only two categories, Govt. or Private sector and you can nominate anyone!

Twestival 2009 Bangalore – A walk through

badge Twestival 2009 Bangalore A walk throughThe Twestival 2009 Bangalore has been long over and i’m not going to report on the event. The event was fun all together. I was transferring the photos from my mobile and i stumbled up on the pics that i took during Image 067 150x150 Twestival 2009 Bangalore A walk throughTwestival. Added on some of the lighter moments of the event.

Twestival was organized for charity and i believe they did good. The highlight for the day for me was the free beer. Yes, free booze and i’m there. The first pint is free, the second drink onwards the money goes to charity. Pause!

The guy who runs TechBangalore, yes H. N. Prashanth, the guy who orders ‘ondu masala dosa, ondu cutting chai’, changed his order to ‘ondu masala dosa, ondu beer’. Yes! he drank for charity icon biggrin Twestival 2009 Bangalore A walk through

That was the effect that Twestival had on the twitterati.

It was a Saturday morning and i had promised Daaku, that i will join in for the Twestival. So got up, brushed, cleaned myslef, put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt that had the IBM logo on the sleeve and RedBulls written Image 069 150x150 Twestival 2009 Bangalore A walk throughon the chest. Landed at the place for twestival and i realized immediately that i made a mistake with my attire. I wore a Halloween costume for a Thanks Giving dinner… oops!!! Worst of all, people miss took me for a guy from Red-Bull, didn’t they notice the ‘s’ at the end of the Bull, icon sad Twestival 2009 Bangalore A walk through

The most embarrassing part, that no one knew – Nakul Shenoy, yes the magician, the techie who only learned to do anonymous mem-reads on other unsuspecting people, was done with his show (which was brilliant btw), dressed up in plain formal attitre and came all the way to the place where we twitterers were having a merry time and joined us in tweeting. First thought that crossed my mind, ‘I have seen this guy somewhere… Where?… Have i met him before?’. It took me full 15mins to realize that it was the same guy on stage reading other people’s thoughts. (Hope he didn’t read my thought at that point)

Prashanth proved that he is a bigger techie, when i complained that i cant find a free wifi to connect to. He took out his Nokia phone and said ‘No problem, wait a few secs, i’ll connect via GPRS and make my phone a wifi hot-spot, then you connect to my phone..’. My jaws were on the floor … LOL

Twestival Bangalore 2009

badge Twestival Bangalore 2009The very first twestival that took place in Bangalore was for the cause – ‘clean and safe drinking water’. Unlike other charity events where you have to bid for some boring piece of art or just buy the tickets to attend something that wasn’t of any interest for you and the only reason for you to do all that was a cause, the twestival is different. Its fun and it makes you feel good for what you did.

The last time it was for a global cause but this time its, lets put it this way, for a more localized cause. This Bangalore twestival 09 is to help organize funds for DreamADream. So whats DreamADream?

Founded in 1999, Dream A Dream is a registered charitable trust which seeks to empower children from vulnerable backgrounds by developing life skills and at the same time sensitizing the community through active volunteering leading to a non-discriminatory society where unique differences are appreciated. Currently, we enhance the lives of 1500 children from vulnerable backgrounds and engage over 1000 active Volunteers who represent an increasingly sensitive community.

An ‘Electric’ Bill

I actually got zapped when i held the electricity bill for the month. It was not just 100 bucks more, nor was it twice. It was bloody 4 times the monthly average.

Don’t believe me? Let me just put it into perspective -

Update – 19th July 2009

Epilogue :  Got the bill corrected. The jackass from BESCOM, read 691 as 891 and billed me for that. BESCOM officials where really helpful to get the bill annulled and issue me a new bill without any delay. Thanks BESCOM dept. at Belandur and Kudlu Gate icon smile An Electric Bill
